    Race Identity

    Despite my criticisms of MMSD on many fronts, I know that there is still much that is very strong within our schools.  I know this from personal experience, given that my step-son currently goes to Memorial and I have students currently going to four other west side schools. All of these school are serving them relatively -or exceptionally - well.

    But keep in mind that not all children are so lucky to come from strong, intact families. There are thousands of even more gifted kids who come from stressful and unstable homes, in the middle of economic desperation, who desperately need more school choices to help them succeed and thrive as productive adults. These children need real opportunities, not pandering and condescending attitudes about how they can never really amount to much under our current system, because of the color of their skin.

    Unlike my step-son and my students, who are all middle-class white children, kids of color -

    whatever their actual economic status is - are actually being taught by our school system, from day one, that their role in life is to grow up with a mindset that the most important aspect of their identity is the color of their skin.  And then there is the flip side of this indoctrination: white kids, who have never shown interest in owning slaves, and some of whom are dirt poor themselves, are taught that they are personally responsible for the continued enslavement of their classmates of color.  All this under the rubric of “fighting racism.”  Can bureaucratic stupidity really go any further than this?  


    And excuse me, while I correct something I just wrote.  My step-son is in fact half Mexican and half white. I will also say that this just occurred to me while editing this post before taking it online. Among my family and friends, talking or thinking about these arbitrary racial distinctions makes no sense when it comes to discussing individuals.  Class issues are, of course, a whole different matter, as is the all-important issue of family stability.   But bringing those meaningful considerations to the forefront would run contrary to the paradigm which the plantation masters want you to think. Keep your eyes on the prize. For Madison in 2019, it's really all about race and slavery.  Economics and family instability mean little or nothing.

    I do have one exception to the above, when it comes to my own family and friends. We have talked about this with a friend whose innocent mixed-race daughter was enrolled in the public school system a few years ago.  Then one day she came home from kindergarten at age 5 (!) in shock from being taught about the civil rights movement. 

    Previously, this beautiful little girl was mostly interested in learning how to socialize with her peers and make new friends. After that devastating experience, this girl became obsessed with her “blackness.”  Her single mother, at considerable financial sacrifice, then pulled her child and enrolled her in a private school.  She is now in 3rd grade and thriving as just another kid. She is very popular with her classmates, who have not been taught by their brainwashed parents or teachers to view other kids in a class by the color of their skin.  No one in her current life views her as someone who recently escaped from the plantation.  But……if they only knew.
